Is Creative Fiction Writing Right For You?

Do you have an imagination that runs wild at times and a creative soul that is itching to document on paper the results of your imagination? If you do, creative fiction writing may just be a great hobby or an ideal full time career for you. There are many top flight writers that knew from a very young age that this was their calling in life. If you do not happen to fit into this group, it does not necessarily mean it is not right for you. There are quite a few creative fiction writers that have discovered later in life the passion for this field of endeavor. If you just prefer to do fiction writing as a hobby, attending classes or workshops may not be for you. On the other hand, if writing is something you would like to make a career out of, it is recommended you get some good education and training.

Some training is highly suggested because there are lots of people with brilliant ideas and a great imagination that lack the skills to turn their ideas into a readable story or book. It would be a good idea to study structure, pacing, character development, dialogue, grammar and more prior to an attempt to turn one's ideas into a masterpiece of fiction writing. For example, there are many agents and publishers that disapprove of using a passive voice in fiction writing. While doing this is not necessarily a mistake in lots of cases, using an active voice is by far the preferred method. Passive voice can be recognized by use of indicators such as has been and was. The correct instruction and training can teach a wanna be fiction writer the correct usage of the passive voice in addition to when to and when not to use it.

Creative writing fiction is almost always an area in which the active voice is preferred a good deal of the time. There is an enormous amount of technique that needs to be learned when assembling a story or a book. It is not just a matter of coming up with a story, you need to make the characters appear to be alive, and present the story in a believable and interesting light. If you allow a story to move along too slowly, the reader becomes disinterested and bored. If you allow it to move too quickly, important details can be skipped. There are a variety of types of fiction such as romance, sci-fi, mystery, horror, literary and others.
